EPL: Merseyside Derby, Everton vs Liverpool

We’re at the Hill Dickinson stadium for the first game in the new stadium, with the Reds having some players like Robertson and Salah playing their final derby.

The first few minutes have been lively and end-to-end, as both teams have their sights set on European football next season. Curtis Jones features at right-back instead of Dominik Szoboslai. In the sixth minute, Beto headed the ball from a James Garner cross, but was denied brilliantly by Georgi Mamardashvili.

With Curtis Jones in defence, he is likely to invert into the midfield. Liverpool are defending when in a mid-block with a 4-2-4 formation. However, Everton have been the better team with chances for Beto to score but he was wasteful, with one of his strikes hitting the corner flag. Everton also defend with a 4-4-2 as well as it is notorious for being hard to break down.

In the twenty-first minute, Tarkowski, the Everton captain blocked Gakpo’s shot which got the Reds a corner. When Liverpool have possession of the ball, Robertson seems to be taking a more conservative role as he is not bombing up and down the pitch.

And in the twenty-seventh minute, Everton seemed to have gotten their deserved lead at home, as Iliman Ndiaye tucked home a cross from Jake O’Brien to give the Toffees the lead against their fierce rivals. However, O’Brien was slightly offside so the goal was disallowed.

Two and a half minutes later, Mo Salah gave his team the lead against the run of play as he was assisted by Cody Gakpo as the Egyptian King knocked the ball past Jordan Pickford. His farewell derby goal is likely to be a special one.

After the goal, Liverpool sought their second, while Everton were content to hit the Reds on the break. They were more dominant on the ball.
