With these sides locked in rivalry, Carrow Road is set for a tasty affair. Norwich City will hope to find comfort in Ipswich’s pain—echoing Eraser by Ed Sheeran—while the Tractor Boys aim to cut the Canaries down to size.
Ipswich were a Premier League team last season, while Norwich were relegated in the 2021/22 PL season. Leif Davis marks his return into the Ipswich side. These are two sides with a very good record in the championship with Ipswich unbeaten in their last eight games. A star feature for the Canada team is former Vancouver Whitecap Ali Ahmed.
Norwich City are building up with three defenders, and sometimes with four. They are also looking to press the Ipswich defenders when they are afforded the opportunity to do so.
A challenge from Ben Slimane led to the referee pointing to the spot. Jaden Philogene stepped up and put the penalty past Kovacevic to give Ipswich the lead which was Jaden’s second goal against the Canaries this season.
And in the fifteenth minute, George Hirst rose to head the ball in which Kovacevic made a crucial yet excellent shot to keep the game at 1-0 to the Tractor Boys.
Both teams have used set pieces to fashion out chances from which they can score from, with the penalty award coming from one of these.
Norwich, as they are a goal down, began to grow into the game as they committed 5 or 6 men forward in a 3-2-5 or a 3-1-6. By the twenty-seventh minute, the ref had awarded four yellow cards as this showed how intense the game really has been. The Canaries have been the better side since the concession of the goal, but with nothing to show so far. Ipswich have average 2.11 points per game in the previous 18 EFL Championship games.
Jack Stacey was the next player cautioned in the match. Given the amount of cards brandished, it wouldn’t be a surprise if someone sees red.
As Norwich pressed in the thirty-fifth minute, they were close to getting an equalizer but was well marshalled by Jacob Greaves.
Norwich in the latter stages of the first half continued to pile on the pressure and kept winning corner after corner as an equalizing goal seems inevitable before the half was over. The Canaries have churned out corner after corner and got their seventh corner with two minutes till half-time. Kudos to Ipswich who have dealt with everything thrown at them.
Against the run of play though was George Hirst’s chance which was well dealt with by Kovacevic on the stroke of half-time.
And from the resulting throw-in, Hirst got his goal as Ipswich sought to put daylight between them and their rivals on the first minute of added time. 2-0 to Ipswich!
Half-time in the East Anglian Derby. 2-0 to Ipswich.
